Gochujang Fried Shrimp (Chili Shrimp)

A very crispy, sour, and sweet flavor

Annyeonghaseyo! Hello, K Friends!  I hope you are doing very well!

I believe that one of the most popular fish cuisine ingredients in the world is shrimp. In fact every country I’ve visited has had many different shrimp cuisines. Today, I am going to introduce a Korean style chili shrimp that is also called, Gochujang fried shrimp (새우 깐풍기). When you first time see this cuisine, you may think that it is Chinese food. But because of Gochujang, it really delivers the Korean flavor. So, let's get started!

Ingredients: 20 medium size shrimp, 1 cup potato starch, 1 egg, 5 cloves of garlic, 2 green onions, 1/4 onion, cooking oil

Sauce: 1/2 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of red pepper paste, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 3 tablespoons of ketchup, 2 tablespoons of vinegar, and a little starch water

How to make Gochujang Fried Shrimp

Step 1: Prepare ingredients

Pat the shrimp dry with a kitchen towel. Slightly cut the inside of the shrimp a couple of times.

Slice two green onions, five cloves of garlic, and onions thinly.

Step 2: Making frying batter

Put 1 cup of potato starch in a bowl. Add about 1/3 cup of water and 1/3 cup of cooking oil. Add white part of an egg. Mix well.

Coat the shrimp with the batter.

Step 3: Deep-Frying

Pour plenty of oil into the wok. The ideal oil temperature for most frying is between 340 and 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Put the coated shrimp with batter in one by one. Fry the shrimp for about 2 mins. Take it out of the strainer.

Cool it down for couple of minutes. Fry the fried shrimp again. When the shrimp is golden brown, take it out into the strainer.

Step 4. Making sauce

Put half cup of water, 2T of soy sauce, 1T of red pepper paste, 3T of sugar, 3T of ketchup, and 2T of vinegar in a bowl. Mix well.

Add 2T of cooking oil, sliced garlic, green onions, and onions. Stir-fry them for about 1 min. Add the sauce. When the ingredients start to boil, add starch water.

Add fried shrimp to the sauce and mix gently and quickly.
